Waymo is the only company that has autonomous driving, and automakers are not willing to cooperate

Waymo's fleet has now driven more than 8 million miles on public roads, not including more than 5 billion miles of simulated driving in Google's data centers, far more than its competitors.

Waymo's advantages don't stop there. Waymo has also invested in building a mapping business and creating LIDAR sensors with competitive prices. And Waymo is promoting its own driverless taxi service. But somewhat embarrassingly, major automakers are reluctant to adopt Waymo's platform.

Honda Motor Co. recently joined General Motors' Cruise autonomous driving division for $2.75 billion. Previously, it was reported that Honda had been communicating with Waymo. However, Waymo was unwilling to share its autonomous driving technology with Honda, so Honda turned to the more open Cruise.

The partnership with GM would allow Honda to examine Cruise's code and study its technology in detail. Waymo was not only unwilling to share technology with Honda, but was even unwilling to sell a stake to Honda.

Only one top automaker, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, has said it is in discussions to use Waymo’s technology in the cars it sells, and Waymo has bought tens of thousands of vehicles from Fiat Chrysler and Jaguar Land Rover for its own use.

Car companies are not content to be just hardware providers, but want to be closer to users and better grasp the user experience. Waymo's behavior has hindered major technology supply and licensing transactions. Car companies are very worried that Waymo will monopolize user services and experience in the future automotive industry.

The industry generally believes that it will take at least two to three years for L4 level autonomous driving cars to be commercialized. Most car companies currently have their own autonomous driving projects, and Waymo is not the only option.
