Mercedes-Benz to invest 40 billion euros in the next eight years to build eight battery cell factories to accelerate electrification transformation

At present, many countries and regions around the world have proposed carbon neutrality goals, which has further promoted the comprehensive electrification transformation of automobiles. Traditional car companies have also accelerated their transformation and disclosed their carbon neutrality timetables.

The most radical among them is Mercedes-Benz. As early as 2018, they announced that they would stop producing all their traditional fuel vehicles by 2022, and all models would become pure electric or hybrid versions. In addition, Mercedes-Benz also announced that it would achieve carbon neutrality in all European factories by 2022 and fully achieve carbon neutrality by 2039.

Recently, Mercedes-Benz announced its latest electrification plan, which will invest 40 billion euros, or about 300 billion yuan, in the next eight years for the development of seven areas including pure electric platforms, battery cell factories, and charging networks.

Mercedes-Benz announced that it will work with its partners to build eight battery cell factories and three pure electric vehicle architecture platforms, and from 2025, all new vehicle platforms will only produce pure electric vehicles.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz will also independently develop the eATS 2.0 motor and acquire the British motor company YASA.

In terms of vehicle models, Mercedes-Benz plans to produce eight electric vehicles in seven factories on three continents as early as next year, and the company is working with German battery and automation company GROB to ensure the supply of power batteries to increase production capacity.

Finally, Mercedes-Benz is also working with Shell to expand its charging network, which is expected to have 30,000 charging stations and 10,000 fast-charging stations in Europe, North America and China by 20205.

Daimler CEO Ola Källenius said that by 2030, Mercedes-Benz will make electric cars dominant even if it cannot achieve full electrification. And by 2025, research and development spending on fuel vehicles will be close to zero.
