NIO receives investment from Tesla's largest external shareholder, with its share price rising 22%

On October 9, Scottish asset management company Baillie Gifford & Co., Tesla's largest external shareholder, revealed in a regulatory filing that it had held 85.3 million shares of NIO, accounting for approximately 11.4% of NIO's shares.

After the news broke, NIO's stock price rose 22% on the day, and its current total market value is US$7.58 billion.

On September 12, NIO went public in the United States with an issue price of $6.26, raising about $1 billion. As soon as it went public, NIO's stock price soared, but then fluctuated.

After the IPO, Li Bin owns 14.5% of NIO shares, but has 48.3% of the voting rights. Tencent and related entities will hold 12.9% of NIO shares and 21.5% of the voting rights. The third largest shareholder, Hillhouse Capital, originally held 7.5% of the shares, and after the IPO, it will hold 6.4% of the shares and 2.7% of the voting rights.

Musk is Tesla's largest shareholder, with about 20% of the company's shares. Baillie Gifford is Tesla's second-largest shareholder, holding 7.7% of Tesla's shares. In addition to Baillie Gifford, Tencent is also a common shareholder of Tesla and NIO. Currently, Tencent holds a 4.9% stake in Tesla.

NIO follows Tesla's example and adopts a strategy of dimensionality reduction. NIO previously launched a sports car EP9, and then launched a mass-produced car ES8, focusing on the mid-to-high-end car market. At present, there are few competitors in the domestic mid-to-high-end new energy vehicle market, which is still in a semi-blank state. NIO, which has made early arrangements, is expected to seize the initiative in this market segment.

Weilai said that although it initially plans to produce cars for the Chinese market, it will also enter the European and American markets in the future. Currently, Weilai has launched the ES8, a 7-seater SUV, and will launch its second model, the ES6, a 5-seater SUV, before the end of this year.
