Recently, the mayors of Paris, Athens, Madrid and Mexico City signed an "Air Quality Declaration" at the C40 Mayors Summit in Mexico City, pledging to ban diesel vehicles from their city roads by 2025 to reduce air pollution caused by exhaust emissions. At the C40 meeting, the four mayors also promised to encourage the use of pure electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel vehicles and hybrid vehicles in the future.

In the past, the EU's automobile emission standards were biased towards carbon dioxide emissions, and the characteristics of diesel engines just bypassed this standard, making diesel cars highly praised. However, after the Volkswagen emissions scandal, issues such as nitrogen oxides and inhalable particulate matter emitted by diesel engines have returned to the public's attention. Therefore, the mayors of the four countries that signed the agreement also complied with the needs of development, and British athletes also called on the mayor of London to respond to this call.
