"The aircraft engine is the heart of the aircraft. You can't ask for it or beg for it! If we import it, our development will be constrained by the performance of other people's engines. The development of engines can promote the development of aircraft. If we want to develop our own military aircraft, our aircraft engines must be strong and we must have independent guarantee."

Since the 1990s, Li Zhiqiang has led scientific researchers to study advanced aviation engine manufacturing technology, which has now been widely used.

The laboratory visited by the reporter mainly develops the hot forming and superplastic forming technology of titanium alloy, which is widely used in our aircraft and engines. After the technology is successfully developed here, it will be transferred to the corresponding enterprises, which will produce aircraft or engine parts.

Manufacturing aircraft engines is an extremely complex and sophisticated technology. Faced with this "bottleneck" technology, Chinese aviation personnel were firm in their beliefs and were not afraid of the dangers and obstacles on the journey. They finally overcame the difficulties and forged the Chinese "heart" of the aircraft.

Li Zhiqiang said that this means that our country has the ability to solve very complex problems in aviation engines. "30 years ago, from the perspective of advanced manufacturing technology of weapons and equipment, we were really far behind developed countries. We learned from them. Now, we don't need to see how anyone does it. We just want to do it ourselves and put this idea into practice."

Experiencing countless failures

But the faith never wavered

Aircraft engines are mechanical parts that rotate at high speed and high temperature, and their power comes from blades. Blades have extremely stringent requirements on shape accuracy and material fatigue durability.

Li Zhiqiang recalled that the researchers spent six years developing and manufacturing the blades, but in the first test, they failed after 60 seconds. "We expected it to last for dozens of hours, but it broke in just one minute."

Failure brought great shock and pressure. But after failure, they regrouped and found problems again and again, solved them, and re-experimented. The needs of the country are their firm belief.

Li Zhiqiang said: "We have the ability to analyze the reasons clearly and we will definitely succeed. The national needs drive us to go, which is a great motivation for us and also a driving force for our scientific research goals."

Li Zhiqiang has always regarded the needs of the country as his scientific research goal. Now, after working in this position for more than 30 years, he has set a more ambitious goal.

He said, "In the future, our goal is to use advanced manufacturing technology to ensure the research and development level and capabilities of weapons and equipment, and support us in building a world-class military."
