Samsung to launch Gear Glass smart glasses in September

Business Korea reported that Samsung will showcase its "Gear Glass" smart glasses at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin in September this year, which will become a competitor to Google Glass.

Reports about Samsung's upcoming smart glasses first emerged in January, when The Korea Times reported that Samsung might release the smart glasses in Germany between September 5 and 10.

Last fall, Samsung registered a design patent in South Korea for smart glasses technology that, like the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, would connect to a smartphone or other mobile device to display alerts and other information in the user's field of view.

According to Business Korea, Samsung has also been granted a similar patent through the United States Patent Law Association, which shows that Samsung is now very serious about launching a new wearable computing device worldwide.

According to the latest reports, Gear Glass smart glasses will use Tizen system, similar to Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smart watches. Samsung has not yet commented on this news.

The smart glasses market is booming. At this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Epson showed off its latest Moverio smart glasses. The retail price of this product is $700, less than half of Google Glass. Google announced this week that Google Glass is now available for sale in the United States.
