stateof.ai: 2020 Artificial Intelligence Report

Stateof.ai has released its latest "Artificial Intelligence Report". Artificial intelligence has made important breakthroughs in natural language processing, but its contribution to the fight against COVID-19 has been modest so far.

With biology and medicine being ideal industries for AI applications, I am particularly excited about the impact AI will have in the life sciences. The field of terminal illness treatment has changed a lot since 2013. We are now on the verge of being able to decode more information about health and revolutionize the way we treat disease.

The 2020 Artificial Intelligence Update is the result of an analysis of content from more than 20 established and emerging companies and research groups, with in-depth research on natural language processing, biology, and autonomous systems.

Four key findings:

1. The cost of AI R&D is soaring: Only a few labs led or funded by companies like Google, Microsoft, and Facebook can afford the high cost of computing power required to conduct AI research.

2.85% of AI research papers do not publish code: Open source AI research is very important for accountability, reproducibility, and advancement of AI. But in reality, the code of the vast majority of AI research papers is locked.

3. Biology has experienced its "AI moment": This year, AI-driven drug discovery startups received large investments, AI-developed drugs entered clinical trials for the first time in history, and the first medical imaging product was recognized by the US government for the first time. Despite pharmaceutical doubts, medical companies driven by AI technology have begun to industrialize rapidly and are scaling up.

4. Artificial intelligence drives explosive military growth: As military applications grow, calls for new AI safety measures are also growing.
