Apple's genius hacker announces abandonment of self-driving car project

American hacker GeoHot (full name George Hotz) became famous for cracking iPhone and Sony PlayStation 3. After his lawsuit with Sony ended, he focused more on driverless cars. He founded Comma.ai and developed a driverless system called Comma One, which costs $999. However, according to foreign media reports, GeoHot announced that he would cancel the driverless car project after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) asked GeoHot to provide more information about the system in a letter.

GeoHot said on Twitter today that "rather than dealing with regulators and lawyers, I would rather spend my life building more amazing tech products," and that Comma.ai's focus will shift to "other products and markets."

It is reported that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not ask GeoHot to stop the Comma One project, but hoped that GeoHot could provide more details such as the installation details, operation and safety instructions of the system, hoping to prove that the system complies with the relevant regulations of the agency.

GeoHot could face fines of up to $21,000 per day if it fails to respond to NHTSA's letter by Nov. 10.
