NIO submits IPO in the US? NIO: No comment

According to people familiar with the matter, NIO will submit the S1 filing in the United States in September this year. The underwriters include well-known investment banks such as Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse, Citigroup, and Deutsche Bank.

If the process goes smoothly, NIO will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange as early as the end of this year or the first quarter of next year. NIO hopes to raise more than $2 billion through the IPO, and the final market value may be as high as $37 billion.

NIO did not comment on the news. NIO has always “not responded” to its own financing news.

According to statistics, the funds raised by NIO have exceeded 15 billion yuan. However, at the opening ceremony of NIO House in Shenzhen a few days ago, NIO Chairman Li Bin personally admitted to the outside world that the company's losses have exceeded 5.1 billion yuan.

At present, NIO has launched three models. One is the EP9, a sports car worth tens of millions of yuan that sets the tone for the brand, another is the EVE, a concept car that showcases NIO's understanding of the autonomous driving field, and the third is the ES8, a large luxury SUV.

In order to mass-produce ES8 as soon as possible, NIO has invested a lot of resources. It is reported that the total investment in the production base jointly built by NIO and JAC is 3 billion yuan.

In terms of branding and marketing, NIO has also invested a lot. Previously, it was widely rumored in the industry that the NIO Day event held in Beijing on December 16, 2017 cost 80 million yuan, and the annual comprehensive operating cost of each NIO House opened in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other cities will exceed 50 million yuan.

ES8 will deliver 10,000 units by the end of this year. There are also reports that ES8 and NIO's next 5-seater SUV ES6 will each deliver 60,000 units in 2019. Therefore, NIO should be very short of money and urgently needs to go public for financing.

This year, the enthusiasm for Chinese concept stocks to go public in the United States has continued to rise, but the market performance of many technology companies that have recently achieved overseas listings has been poor. In Hong Kong, Xiaomi and Inke's share prices fell one after another after a brief rise after listing. Uxin lowered the offering range from US$10.5-12.5 to US$9 before listing. After a sharp rise on the first day, Pinduoduo fell by more than 7% for two consecutive days.

NIO's stock price is likely to be pushed down, and it will be very difficult to achieve a final IPO valuation of US$37 billion.
