Guangzhou's self-driving taxi trial operation was halted, and the pre-operation application was not approved

The self-driving taxi project, which began trial operation in Guangzhou University Town on November 1, was halted by the Panyu District Traffic Police and Transportation Bureau.

After receiving the information about the driverless taxi on the afternoon of November 1, Panyu traffic police immediately contacted the traffic control office and asked the traffic control office to manage the taxi company and eliminate the hidden dangers.

The traffic police department said that they had not received any notification from the higher authorities to allow the trial operation. The next step will be to continue to work closely with the traffic management office to strictly manage and control the vehicle; to talk to the person in charge of the company to clarify the relevant regulations again; and to strive for the law enforcement basis and guidance of the higher authorities.

The Panyu Traffic Police Department replied to Baiyun Company: Before the relevant laws, regulations, policy documents and technologies are improved, this model involves a wide range of issues and the consequences are unpredictable. It is suspected of illegal and irregular operations. Please immediately suspend the trial operation in the University Town. It is strictly forbidden to invite ordinary people to participate in the test. Please immediately report to the Municipal Transportation Commission and Traffic Police Department.

Before launching the trial operation of self-driving taxis, Baiyun Company had contacted the two departments mentioned above, but did not obtain permission.

After being rejected twice, Baiyun Company stated that the project is still proceeding as usual and is planned to be carried out in the future.

The trial operation details of self-driving taxis have changed. The location has been narrowed down to the Bio Island International Apartment Road. The trial ride fee has been changed from the same price as ordinary taxis to a "free trial ride".

The trial operation time of self-driving taxis has also changed. Previously it was from 14:00 to 16:00 every day. In the future, trial rides will no longer be provided on weekends, but the two-hour time in the afternoon will remain unchanged.

Previously, the Guangzhou Municipal Transportation Commission had issued the "Guiding Opinions on Road Testing of Intelligent Connected Vehicles in Guangzhou", and the consultation period ended on June 13 this year. The "Opinions" have been submitted to the municipal government for review and approval. After the municipal government's review and approval, it will be jointly issued and implemented by the Municipal Transportation Commission, the Industry and Information Technology Commission, and the Public Security Bureau.
