Huawei Intelligent Driving President: L5 autonomous driving will never be seen in this lifetime, and machine accidents are murders, to put it bluntly

After Huawei entered the automotive field, autonomous driving has always been its focus. However, when attending the 2021 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, Su Jing, president of Huawei Intelligent Driving, gave a relatively pessimistic answer to whether machines can completely replace human drivers. He believes that in the next 100 years, the IQ of machines will not exceed that of humans, and L5 level (i.e. fully autonomous driving) will be difficult to achieve in this lifetime. Su Jing also said that after machines enter human society and coexist with humans, they will definitely cause a certain accident rate, which is to say "killing people".

Su Jing believes that when users are faced with new technologies, they tend to be completely distrustful at first, but will fully trust them after trying them out and feeling satisfied. Accidents often start to occur at this stage, and Tesla's recent frequent driving accidents stem from this. Therefore, the next five years will be a relatively dangerous period for autonomous driving.

To this end, Huawei will work hard to build an L4 autonomous driving system technically, but will limit it to L2.9 for commercial use. Huawei's goal is to enable the autonomous driving system to handle all scenarios as much as possible, but at the same time it will also require users to supervise the vehicle rather than completely delegate authority.

Finally, Su Jing also called on practitioners in the autonomous driving industry: "Each of us has the responsibility not to destroy this industry. We need to make the next five years of danger for this industry pass as smoothly as possible, otherwise we may become sinners in history."
