Deloitte Consulting: Generative Artificial Intelligence Report, Q2 2024

Value creation

The proportion of organizations reporting that they have achieved their intended benefits to a “great” or “very great” extent ranges from 18% to 36%, depending on the type of benefit pursued.

Organizations reporting “high” or “very high” levels of generative AI expertise are more actively scaling generative AI and realizing their expected benefits to a greater extent than other organizations.

Companies primarily plan to reinvest savings from generative AI into innovation (45%) and improving operations (43%).

expand

Leaders believe that scaling is key to creating value, increasing the impact of generative AI on the business, and expanding the technology’s user base. The scaling phase refers to the stage where the potential benefits of generative AI are transformed into real-world value.

Common areas of concern include data security and quality, explainability of generative AI outputs, and workers’ distrust or unfamiliarity with generative AI tools.

Employee use of approved generative AI tools and applications remains low, with nearly half of surveyed organizations (46%) providing approved generative AI access to only a small percentage of employees (20% or less).

Building Trust

Lack of trust remains a major barrier to the large-scale adoption and deployment of generative AI.

Trust issues have not stopped organizations from rapidly adopting generative AI for experiments and proofs of concepts, and 60% are effectively balancing rapid implementation with risk management.

Developing the Workforce

Most organizations (75%) expect the technology to impact their talent strategy within two years; 32% reporting “very high” levels of generative AI expertise are already making changes.

The most anticipated talent strategy impacts are process redesign (48%) and upskilling or retraining (47%).

In the short term, more organizations expect the technology to increase headcount (39%) than to decrease it (22%).
