Apple places 200 million orders: iPhone 8 will use OLED screen

iPhone 7 is not released yet, is it too early to talk about iPhone 8? Obviously not, judging from Apple's layout, next year will be their masterpiece, and this year's new iPhone is at most a minor update to patch up the past year.

There have been many rumors before that the iPhone 8 will use an OLED screen. Is this really the case?

Now, Korean media has confirmed that Apple has placed an order with Korean operators, looking for 200 million OLED screens for use in next year's mobile phones (to be used in 2017), and Samsung has already won 100 million of the order with its resources.

In addition to the confirmed 100 million units, Samsung and LG will continue to compete for the next 50% of the orders. In order to obtain more orders, Samsung is expanding its factory capacity, while Sharp's OLED screens will not be mass-produced until 2018 at the earliest.

An Apple component supplier told Korean media that it is currently stepping up preparations to supply OLED-related components for next year's iPhone. It now appears that Apple will place the final order around the fourth quarter of this year. In addition to screens, Apple is also producing supporting components for OLED screens.

Compared with LCD, OLED screens have better display quality and are more power-efficient, which is also a major factor why Apple uses them on the iPhone. But the tragedy is that with Apple placing such a huge order, domestic mobile phone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Meizu, Huawei, OPPO, and vivo will face a shortage of OLED screen resources. Currently, Samsung and LG account for 95% of the global OLED screen production capacity.

According to Apple's thinking, mobile phones are just the first step in adopting OLED. In the future, Apple will turn to OLED screens in more products such as laptops. The last thing to look forward to is that it is said that after using the OLED screen, the Home button of the iPhone will be concentrated in the screen, which means there will be no physical button.

From this point of view, the shortage of OLED screens will be the biggest worry that mobile phone manufacturers will face next year!
