Weekly Science | Answers to common questions from parents about children's vision protection

Myopia prevention and control

Recently, we have sorted out the frequently asked questions about children's vision from parents, hoping to help everyone understand children's vision more clearly and correctly, and implement scientific prevention and control of children's myopia.

one

1. Why can some children’s vision reach 5.3 while others can only reach 5.1 when they have the same emmetropia?

Our eyes are different from person to person, and the limits of our visual acuity are different.

Different people have different numbers, positions, and distributions of photoreceptors in their retinas. These subtle differences determine the limits of our visual acuity. These are all within the normal range, just like our height.

2. At what degree of myopia do you need to wear glasses?

Some children have 100-degree myopia, and doctors recommend taking medication to control it first to see the effect; while other children also have 100-degree myopia, and doctors recommend getting glasses in time? Many parents are confused about how many degrees of myopia are needed to get glasses?

There is no exact saying that a certain degree of myopia requires glasses. The key is whether the child's naked eye vision is sufficient when the myopia has just occurred or the degree of myopia is relatively low. For example, a child has 100 degrees of myopia and his naked eye vision is still 4.9. At this time, we can use some myopia prevention and control drugs, observe the changes in the eye axis first, and then decide on the next measures; but if a child has 100 degrees of myopia and his naked eye vision is only 4.5 or 4.6, then he must be fitted with glasses in time to control it.

3. Do the “eye protection mode” and “late night mode” of mobile phones protect the eyes?

No. From the perspective of eye protection, we treat the use of electronic products from four aspects: duration, distance, screen size, and screen brightness. Whether it is children, teenagers, or adults, when using mobile phones and computers, they need to maintain a corresponding distance and usage duration, follow the three 20 principles (every 20 minutes of study or work, look 20 steps away for more than 20 seconds) and the three ones (one fist, one foot, one inch) correct sitting posture to avoid deepening myopia due to excessive use of electronic products.

At the same time, the "late night mode" of the mobile phone will make the screen brightness much darker, which will increase the burden on the eyes. The dark background of the mobile phone is more beneficial for people with poor eyesight or who are sensitive to strong light.

Please don't stay up late, especially don't stay up late checking your phone.

4.What are some eye protection products that are not a waste of money?

(1) Hot compress eye mask.

Hot compress eye mask can not only improve blood circulation in the eyes, relax the eyes and relieve visual fatigue, but also help maintain the normal function of the meibomian glands and improve the abnormal function of the meibomian glands. Generally, the hot compress temperature should be around 42°.

(2) Cold compress eye patch.

Cold compresses can constrict capillaries, reduce swelling around the eyes, and prevent the spread of inflammation or suppuration.

(3) Artificial tears.

Artificial tears are a product that simulates human tears and can moisturize the eyes and relieve dry eyes.

(4) Reading and writing desk lamp

Home lighting and illumination environment are very important for children’s vision health. Parents are advised to purchase desk lamps that meet the following standards. For details, see “Performance Requirements for Desk Lamps for Reading and Writing”.
