Zhong Nanshan: Omicron infection is not scary, 99% can fully recover within 7 to 10 days!

At the "Chinese Medical Association Respiratory Medicine Annual Meeting-2022" video conference held at 8 am this morning, Academician Zhong Nanshan delivered a report entitled "New Coronavirus Omicron Epidemic Dynamics and Response".

First, Zhong Nanshan affirmed the achievements made in epidemic prevention and control.

In the report, he said that the second wave of Omicron epidemics nationwide is characterized by strong transmissibility. Compared with the Delta strain, the risk of sequelae of COVID-19 caused by the Omicron strain is significantly reduced, and asymptomatic infected people basically have no sequelae of COVID-19. The focus of the prevention and control policy should be shifted from infection prevention and control to severe disease prevention and control, and the government should implement further optimization and implementation of epidemic prevention and control measures ("New Ten Articles"). He mentioned that adequate vaccination can play a great protective role.

Zhong Nanshan said that one of the keys to the next step of prevention and control is to strengthen vaccination, especially **heterogeneous vaccines are more effective. **He further stated that the same vaccine can be used to continue to strengthen immunity; **heterogeneous vaccines can be used to strengthen immunity, and the effect is significantly improved; **focus on strengthening the immunization of the elderly and vulnerable groups; strengthen vaccine protection for medical staff; and accelerate the development and approval of nasal spray and inhaled vaccines.

He also said that infection with Omicron (BA.4/5, BF7) is not scary, 99% can fully recover within 7-10 days, and the focus should be on preventing and controlling severe cases (self-protection, designated hospitals, and protection of medical staff).
