Microsoft International President: Global piracy rates remain high

Microsoft has been a pioneer in anti-piracy software for many years, and is also one of the biggest victims. Microsoft Windows and Office are the favorites of software pirates. Now, Microsoft International President Jean-Phillipe Courtois said that the global piracy situation has not improved significantly and the piracy rate is still high.

Therefore, the software manufacturers that are most affected have shifted their business models to software services (SaaS) and cloud computing services (CAAS) in order to reduce piracy rates. Jean-Phillipe Courtois also talked about how Microsoft has migrated applications to the cloud to make them more difficult to pirate. At least on Microsoft's side, the transformation has been successful, Microsoft's Office 365 business has developed smoothly, and its cloud service Azure has grown rapidly amid fierce competition.

Despite this, piracy remains a big problem. According to the Business Software Alliance, piracy rates increased by 43% worldwide in 2014, with Africa being the hardest hit by piracy due to poverty and inequality. According to Jean-Phillipe Courtois, Microsoft hopes to address this problem by providing skills training to young Africans, encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship, and increasing access to the Internet.
