Intel invests another $250 million in chips to make self-driving cars

Recently, according to a well-known media website, Intel CEO Ryan Kranich delivered a keynote speech at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Tuesday (2016.11.15), announcing an additional investment of at least $250 million in the next two years to make fully autonomous driving a reality. This is the first time Intel has given a speech at an automotive conference, which also shows how important the automotive market is to Intel.

These investments will drive the development of autonomous driving technology, promote the expansion of next-generation data connectivity, and improve communication, associated perception, deep learning, security, safety and other aspects. The new additional investment will bring deeper research in the field of autonomous driving. Krannick emphasized that technology will promote innovation in the Internet of Things in the global transportation industry; directly reduce risks while improving safety, mobility, efficiency and reducing costs; and enable more companies to make autonomous driving systems more reliable with the help of data.

Facing many automotive and technology industry professionals at the conference, Krannick talked about how the automotive industry is undergoing a major transformation and how self-driving cars require unprecedented levels of computing, intelligence and connectivity. Regarding the trend that various sensors, sonar lidar and cameras will be installed in self-driving cars, Krannick also emphasized that the automotive industry needs to be prepared for the arrival of massive data, with a single car generating 4,000GB of data every day.

The additional investment announcement is part of Intel’s ongoing collaboration with manufacturers and system suppliers to help integrate advanced technologies into vehicles.
