UK car production falls in October 2016 due to Brexit

According to Reuters, British car production fell for the first time in a year in October due to slowing domestic demand, prompting car industry lobby groups to once again call on the government to maintain free trade policies after Brexit.

According to data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the total output of the UK auto market fell by 1% year-on-year to 151,795 vehicles in October, but the cumulative output in 2016 still broke the total output in the same period of 2015, setting a new record again. In October, the demand for British cars in foreign markets rose slightly, but the demand in the domestic market fell by 10.9%.

But vehicle registration data shows that overall UK car sales have slowed since the June 23 referendum, with a rise in business demand making up for a fall in private sales since April.

Before the referendum, the vast majority of foreign automakers in the UK wanted the UK to remain in the EU. Nissan, which owns the UK's largest car manufacturer, will continue to invest in the UK only after the British government guarantees that it will not increase tariffs.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said the figures showed the government needed to ensure the cost of exporting UK-made vehicles did not increase. "British-made vehicles must continue to be attractive to international buyers and exports should not be affected by additional tariffs, costs or other factors," Hawes said.

SMMT pointed out that the upgrading of car models by car companies also had a certain impact on the monthly data.
