Dongfeng Honda recalls more than 80,000 vehicles due to minor problems with electric rearview mirrors

Automobile recalls due to quality issues are becoming more and more common in China. The reasons include not only the horrifying vehicle axle breakage that was previously reported, but also "minor problems" such as abnormal operation of the electric rearview mirror.

Recently, Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co., Ltd. filed a recall plan with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine in accordance with the requirements of the "Regulations on the Management of Recall of Defective Automobile Products" and the "Implementation Measures for the Regulations on the Management of Recall of Defective Automobile Products", and decided to recall some Elysion, Spirior (and Spirior Hybrid vehicles, totaling more than 80,000 vehicles) from December 1, 2017.

Regarding the possible quality problems of these vehicles, Dongfeng Honda explained that it was due to improper surface treatment of the movable contacts inside the electric rearview mirror switch, which caused wear of the movable contacts during the operation of the switch. After the wear powder accumulated and oxidized, the contact resistance increased, resulting in a certain probability that the left and right exterior rearview mirrors would automatically fold at the same time during the vehicle's driving or parking, affecting the driver's view of the rear and posing a safety hazard.

In response to this recall, Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co., Ltd. will replace the improved electric rearview mirror switch for vehicles within the recall scope free of charge.

However, what is more noteworthy is that this incident once again shows that the reliability of electronic components has always been one of the important factors affecting the safety of automobile operation.

In traditional cars, problems with electric rearview mirrors can become the fuse for accidents. With the rapid popularization of electric cars and intelligent cars, the hidden dangers caused by "electricity" in future cars are obviously more worthy of users' vigilance.
