BMW and Great Wall Motors set up a new joint venture to produce electric Mini

According to foreign media reports, although China is gradually removing joint venture requirements for non-Chinese automakers, BMW has deepened its relationship with Chinese automakers through two major electric vehicle projects. BMW recently announced the establishment of a joint venture with Great Wall Motors, which will be responsible for the production of Mini electric vehicles in the future, but the first electric Mini will still be produced at BMW's main factory in Oxford, England.

It is reported that the joint venture is named Spotlight Automotive Limited and will also build electric vehicles for Great Wall Motors in the future.

Great Wall was in the American news cycle for a while last August when rumors circulated that the Chinese automaker was interested in buying part or all of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Obviously, that didn't happen.

BMW will also deepen its partnership with Brilliance Automotive Group Holdings, another joint venture it has been operating for 15 years. This will allow the company's plants in Tiexi and Dadong to increase annual production by a net 520,000 vehicles. In addition, the company will be responsible for producing the new electric crossover iX3 - for local sales and export to other markets. It is not clear whether BMW will also produce the iX3 elsewhere.
