Great Wall Chery recalls 17,623 electric vehicles, Farasis Energy and others are implicated, CATL denies

According to the information released by the State Administration for Market Regulation, since July 16, Great Wall and Chery have recalled a total of 17,623 quantity New energy vehicles. Among them: Chery Automobile recalled some Chery Arrizo 5e electric vehicles produced from July 20, 2018 to May 28, 2019, totaling 1,407 vehicles; Great Wall Motors recalled Great Wall Ora iQ electric vehicles produced from July 7, 2018 to October 30, 2019, totaling 16,216 vehicles.

According to the official website of the State Administration for Market Regulation, the recalled models of both brands are at risk of power and thermal runaway.

It is reported that there are mismatches between the consistency of some power batteries installed in vehicles covered by Great Wall Motors' recall and the BMS software control strategy. After long-term, continuous and frequent fast charging, the battery performance will deteriorate. In extreme cases, thermal runaway of the power battery may occur, posing a safety hazard.

For the vehicles within the scope of Chery Automobile's recall, some parts of the power battery assembly may have consistency fluctuations. After long-term use, the bottom of the vehicle may be hit abnormally or subjected to severe bumps and shocks. In extreme cases, this may cause the high-voltage connection of the battery pack system to loosen, increase the local contact internal resistance, and cause the components to overheat and bake the battery cells when used at high currents, which may cause thermal runaway of the battery and pose a safety hazard.

At present, several suppliers including Farasis Energy have been involved in this recall, and Great Wall Motors has confirmed that the iQ model is equipped with Farasis batteries. In addition, there are rumors that some of the recalled vehicles use batteries from CATL, but CATL has denied this.
