Microsoft announced the first free Windows version: Windows 8.1 with Bing in its official blog last weekend. According to Microsoft, this version is mainly for low-cost devices and is only provided to hardware manufacturers for pre-installation on devices, thereby reducing hardware costs and promoting the popularity of Windows 8.1 devices. This was originally a good thing, but rumors have spread that Windows 8.1 with Bing is actually very tricky, requiring the device's memory to not exceed 1GB and the body storage space to not exceed 16GB. For a time, Microsoft's "overbearing" caused dissatisfaction among many users. In fact, it is not that most media ignored this restriction and did not report it, nor is it that Microsoft hid it deeply, but because Windows 8.1 with Bing does not have this restriction at all. The reason for the above misunderstanding is that some media outlets took it out of context. As Microsoft's own blog, Microsoft's official blog always spends one or two paragraphs at the beginning of the article to praise its own achievements. The paragraph about 1GB memory and 16GB storage says: "(self-praise)... With the recent release of Windows 8.1 Update, we support hardware partners to produce lower-cost devices. These low-cost Windows devices can provide consumers with the fast and smooth experience they need even if they only have 1GB memory and 16GB storage... (continue to brag)" Microsoft's words are just bragging that Windows 8.1 Update can run smoothly even on low-end devices, and it is not about the hardware requirements or restrictions of Windows 8.1 with Bing. In fact, the restriction of Windows 8.1 with Bing is that when the devices using this system are sold from the factory, OEM manufacturers must set the default search engine of IE browser to Bing. However, this restriction is not for consumers. When you get a Windows 8.1 with Bing device, you can change this setting through the IE menu and choose any search engine as the default. In other words, although Windows 8.1 with Bing uses Bing search by default, it does not force you to use it. You can change it at will. In addition, Microsoft also requires these devices to be pre-installed with Office or provide a one-year Office 365 subscription. This is more of a benefit than a restriction. In addition, Windows 8.1 with Bing provides the same user experience as Win8.1 and Win8.1 Update. So why launch a free version of Windows 8.1? Microsoft also gave a clear explanation that providing Windows 8.1 with Bing to hardware manufacturers for free is to enable more people to use products such as Windows 8.1 and Office, and at an unprecedented ultra-low price, which also provides more opportunities and a larger market for developers and their applications. Simply put, Microsoft is systematically expanding the Windows territory through this move, especially the tablet market.
