How many iPhones will Apple sell in the third quarter?
According to financial website The Motley Fool, Apple will release its third quarter financial report for fiscal year 2014 on July 22. Wall Street analysts expect Apple to sell 35 million iPhones in the third quarter. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty released a research report last month, predicting that Apple's third quarter iPhone sales are expected to reach 39 million units. Huberty's forecast is based on Morgan Stanley's own smartphone tracking system AlphaWise. However, Apple's actual performance has been stronger than AlphaWise's expectations in four of the past five quarters. Apple continues to make progress in increasing its smartphone share in emerging markets. Apple CEO Tim Cook said last quarter that the iPhone's advantages are reflected in multiple markets. Apple's iPhone sales in the BRIC countries set a new record. Apple's cooperation with China Mobile has driven iPhone sales to a record high in Greater China. In the Chinese market, Apple continues to enjoy the benefits of its cooperation with China Mobile. Apple launched the China Mobile version of the iPhone on January 17. The third quarter was the first full quarter that China Mobile's iPhone was available in China. In addition, the adoption of 4G networks in China is accelerating. As of the end of May, China Mobile had 8.1 million 4G users, which means that the penetration rate of 4G networks in China reached 1% after four months of promotion. With China Telecom launching 4G networks in February and China Unicom launching 4G networks in March, China's three major operators began to deploy 4G services before Apple's third quarter, which will benefit Apple. Although the performance of the iPhone 5c did not meet Apple's internal expectations, it still represents Apple's strategy to enter the field of cheaper devices. To promote this strategy, Apple launched a cheaper 8GB iPhone in March for multiple markets. The new model is 11% cheaper in markets such as India. Apple also re-launched the old iPhone 4 in India, including the 8GB model. Overall, although the third quarter is traditionally a slow season, Apple still has many positive factors that can help boost iPhone sales.
