New firmware causes trouble: MacBook Air may become bricked

Apple released the EFI 2.9 update for the MacBook Air last week to fix sleep/wake issues on mid-2011 MacBook Airs. These laptops run OS X 10.9.2 and later. However, the update can have issues installing, causing it to fail to install or even cause serious system crashes. On Tuesday, some users reported issues with the update on Apple's Support Community forums, including installation bugs and system freezes. It's not clear what caused these issues, but it could be due to a corrupted file. While the users had a variety of different issues, they all had the same hardware. One user took his bricked MacBook Air to an Apple Store Genius Bar for repair. A technician successfully restored the MacBook Air by performing a "soft reset" of the SMC to erase the corrupted EFI update. The issue was subsequently reported to Apple's engineering department, but Apple has not yet removed the EFI update page. The discussion on this issue has 850 views and 42 replies, with many reporting similar issues. It's not clear how many MacBook Air users are affected. Apple's update is intended to address the problem of MacBook Air taking too long to wake up after sleep, and the fan running at full speed after waking up.
