iOS 8 criticized by FBI

FBI Director James Comey said this week that he was concerned about Apple's inability to decrypt user data in iOS 8.

"I very much agree that we should get a search warrant from an independent judge before we can access the contents of anybody's closet or smartphone," Comey said. "However, to design a closet that can never be opened, even in a child abduction case or with a court order, I think is totally unconscionable."

Recently, the encryption function of iOS 8 has caused criticism from many judicial officials. This situation is similar to the "encryption war" in the 1990s. At that time, Phil Zimmerman, the founder of PGP, was almost imprisoned for this. At that time, encryption was mainly aimed at PC hard drives, not mobile phones. In the end, the court ruled that such encryption was legal, and large companies such as Microsoft and Apple also began to provide full-disk encryption services.

It should be noted that Comey's statement about search warrants is not shared by all federal agencies. Such searches are often based on lower-level legal documents, such as subpoenas, national security emails, or large-scale data collection warrants approved by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. In fact, this is exactly why Apple introduced this encryption feature to prevent unauthorized data collection by government agencies.
