Honda CEO: Electric vehicles will become "household appliances", accelerating electrification is just to keep up with the international situation

Honda is an outlier in the global automotive electrification transition. Currently, the old Japanese automaker has only launched one pure electric model, the Honda e, while most of the others are hybrid or oil-to-electric models.

At a recent press conference, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe bluntly stated that selling electric vehicles is not profitable at present. At the same time, he also believes that the price of electric vehicles will continue to fall in the next few years and become another "household appliance."

Although he believes that electric vehicles are not profitable, Toshihiro Mibe is a supporter of electrification. At the press conference, he said that Honda is open to establishing an electrification alliance with other automakers, hoping to share costs and risks in this way and achieve profitability as soon as possible.

At the same time, in response to the wave of policies promoting electrification around the world, Toshihiro Mibe also said, "If the rules change, we will have no choice but to respond. If we can't keep up with international trends, we won't be able to do business." To this end, he said that Honda will evaluate the applicability of the electrification plan and may accelerate the transition to electrification.

Honda is currently working with General Motors to develop two electric vehicles, the 2024 Honda Prologue and an Acura SUV. In addition, Honda is also working with General Motors to develop hydrogen fuel cell technology.
