Counterpoint: Global sales of pure electric passenger vehicles increased by 29% year-on-year in Q3 2023

In the pure electric vehicle market, Tesla is the undisputed leader and a global bestseller, but with the rise of Chinese automakers such as BYD, the landscape has changed. Recently, the latest report released by market research firm Counterpoint Research shows that global passenger pure electric vehicle (BEV) sales in the third quarter of 2023 increased by 29% year-on-year, with BYD's BEV sales catching up with Tesla and expected to surpass it in the fourth quarter of this year, becoming the world's number one .

The report is very detailed, stating that China is the world's largest pure electric vehicle market. Although due to various factors, China's pure electric vehicle sales only increased by 11% in the third quarter, which is lower than the global average, but overseas, Chinese brand pure electric vehicle sales exceeded 130,000 units, a four-fold increase compared to the third quarter of last year!

In terms of specific brands and models, BYD (excluding Denza) has caught up with Tesla with a year-on-year growth of 68%, and its share of the global pure electric vehicle market has reached 17%, an increase of 4 percentage points from the same period last year . Volkswagen ranks third with 8%, followed by Geely, Trumpchi, Hyundai and others.

The top five best-selling models in the world are Tesla and BYD. Tesla Model Y is the best-selling model in the world, followed by BYD Yuan PLUS (ATTO 3). Tesla Model 3 ranks third , BYD's Dolphin and Seagull, which was only launched this year, rank fourth and fifth respectively.
