Uncovering the secret of HoloLens' high energy and low consumption: 24-core HPU

Even though it has been released for a long time, Microsoft's AR headset HoloLens is still only open to developers, and the production is rare and the price is high. Previously, Microsoft has introduced that the main processor of HoloLens uses Intel Atom Cherry Trail , but the real high-load computing in HoloLens is actually Microsoft's new customized chip (HPU) , which is responsible for data transmission between the CPU and different sensors . Recently, Microsoft officially released the detailed specifications of the HPU unit. Microsoft said that this new customized HPU is manufactured using TSMC's 28nm process, has 24 Tensilica DSP cores, can process 1 trillion data instructions per second, and Microsoft has also equipped this HPU with 8MB SRAM and 1GB LPDDR3 memory. It is worth mentioning that the power consumption of this HPU is only 10w , and after the calculation of this low-power HPU processor, the CPU load can be greatly reduced, which also reduces the overall power consumption of HoloLens. Microsoft said that compared with software computing, the use of HPU can increase the data transmission rate by 200 times, which is the secret of HoloLens' high energy and low consumption. However, this new customized HPU has not yet been mass-produced , which is one of the main reasons why Microsoft HoloLens has a small production volume.
