SEMI: Global silicon wafer shipments will reach 12,266 million square inches in 2024, a year-on-year decrease of 2.7%
The year-end analysis report on the silicon wafer industry released by SEMI shows that in the second half of 2024, global silicon wafer demand will begin to recover from the industry's downward cycle in 2023. In 2024, global silicon wafer shipments fell 2.7% to 12.266 billion square inches, and silicon wafer revenue fell 6.5% to US$11.5 billion during the same period.
In 2024, the overall inventory adjustment process will be slow due to weak end-demand in most market segments, which will affect fab utilization and silicon wafer shipments in specific application areas. The recovery trend is expected to continue until 2025, with more significant improvements in the second half of the year. "Generative artificial intelligence and new data centers have been the driving forces for the development of state-of-the-art foundry and memory devices such as HBM, but most other end markets are still recovering from excess inventory. As many customers mentioned in their financial reports, the power semiconductor market is still in a deep inventory adjustment stage, which has an impact on global silicon wafer shipments," said Chongwei Li, Chairman of SEMI SMG and Vice President and Chief Audit Officer of GlobalWafers.
