Apple asks iPhone price cut: domestic production capacity will be transferred to India

The latest report from Indian media said that Apple will start producing iPhones in India from April next year and has already released a small number of recruitment announcements in India.

According to industry sources, Taiwanese original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and Apple partner Wistron will build a factory in Bengaluru, India. Specifically, the factory will be located in Peenya, which is an industrial center in Bengaluru.

The report said that Apple is "very serious" about assembling and manufacturing products in India. If it can achieve manufacturing in India, Apple will be able to sell mobile phones in India at a more competitive price.

Currently, Apple is forced to pay an additional 12.5% ​​tariff when importing products into India, but if it can be produced locally in India, then Apple will not have to pay this tariff.

Although Foxconn also plans to build a factory in India, it will not manufacture products exclusively for Apple. Foxconn also plans to use the factory to produce mobile phones for Xiaomi, OnePlus and other companies.

In addition, a small number of job postings posted on Apple's official website further confirmed the company's production plans in India. One of the job postings is for "iPhone Operations Manager India". The job postings show that the job seeker will be responsible for the gradual increase in production of Apple's new products in India, leading the OEM team and working closely with suppliers, engineers and operations teams to ensure the supply of parts.

Other positions Apple is recruiting for in India include purchasing manager, regional sales manager, and software engineering director.

If Apple sets up manufacturing facilities in India, it could theoretically eventually be allowed to open retail stores in the country. Indian law requires any company that opens a retail store to manufacture a certain percentage of its products in India, and while it was thought that Apple might be able to circumvent that requirement, that has not been the case.
