Microsoft is reportedly testing compatibility with Android apps on Windows 10 phones

On March 30, Microsoft was reportedly testing software that would allow Android apps to be used on phones running Windows 10.

Microsoft is testing the idea of running Android apps on its Windows 10 phones as a solution to its app woes, which are that its Windows phones rarely get the latest updates and smaller phones don't even have Windows at all.

Citing multiple anonymous sources, Neowin, a technology blog, said Microsoft is internally testing new features that will allow Windows 10 phones to run apps developed on Google's platform. The site also said that Android apps will be able to run on Windows 10 once it is released later this year.

The Android emulation project is still moving forward, but Microsoft has not yet decided whether to integrate the feature into Windows 10 phones. The uncertainty stems from Microsoft's concerns about the legality of running Android apps since they are native apps in Google Play.

Another concern for Microsoft is that if it includes an Android emulator, it could discourage developers from developing "native apps" or continuing to develop apps for Windows 10. The Redmond, Washington-based company still hopes its universal apps will attract more developers to develop apps for Windows Phone because those apps will also be used on devices such as the Xbox One and Windows PCs.

But Microsoft's concerns about the legality of the plan are puzzling. BlackBerry already uses a similar feature on its BB10 devices, using Android's open source framework to run apps developed for Google's operating system.

However, Neowin website said that Microsoft is worried that if it allows running Google Play native applications without any changes on Windows, Google may take it to court. But in fact, Google Play is just Google's application market, it does not require downloading Android applications.
