Ultrasonic sensor helmet lets you walk like a bat

Bats, as creatures that live in darkness all year round, almost never collide with any obstacles, no matter how poor the light is. With the advancement of science and technology, people gradually understand the secret: bats can emit and receive ultrasonic waves. In this way, they can determine the location of obstacles and avoid them calmly. In addition to bats, dolphins also have a similar function. However, this ability is not possessed by humans. Therefore, in the dark, we usually need to use light-emitting devices to see the road clearly. But for the blind and visually impaired, they may feel very helpless in any situation. In order to allow the blind to walk like normal people or play a role in many special environments, a scientist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany has developed such a helmet.
At first glance, it seems that there is a circle of cameras around the helmet. But in fact, these are six ultrasonic sensors that can determine the specific location and current distance of obstacles by emitting and receiving ultrasonic waves. It can scan all obstacles within a straight-line distance of several meters and can reach a scanning speed of 50 times per second. As for the reminder method, an elastic wrapping pad is installed on the sensor at the corresponding position, which will gently push the wearer's head to remind them of the distance by the weight of the push, and the heavier the push, the closer it is. Regarding its use, researchers said that it can help the blind walk better. At the same time, it can also help firefighters have better recognition ability when facing fire and disaster smoke, and play a role in some adventures and other uses. |
