Fantastic mammatus clouds appear in the sky, people with claustrophobia should beware

Two days ago, a cloud appeared in the lead-gray sky of Fuxi Mountain in Zhengzhou, hanging below the cumulonimbus cloud, which looked very special. Do you know what kind of cloud it is?

According to the local meteorological department, this is a suspended spherical cloud, also known as a mammatus cloud.

Recently, hanging spherical clouds have also appeared in Shuyang, Jiangsu and Tai'an, Shandong.

A hanging ball cloud, similar in shape to a cow's udder, can form beneath either a stratocumulus or a cumulonimbus cloud, but most often forms beneath the anvil of a cumulonimbus cloud.

Suspended globules are formed by strong downdrafts: pockets of cold, moist air quickly sink from the top of the cloud to the bottom, the opposite of the normal cloud formation pattern (warm, moist air convects upward to form clouds). Suspended globules come in a variety of shapes and compositions, from nearly spherical pockets to tubes, ripples, or undulating globules arranged in cell-like formations.

Relevant personnel from the Zhengzhou Meteorological Bureau Service Center said that the appearance of mammatus clouds often indicates that a storm or tornado is approaching.
