World Bipolar Disorder Day丨They are neither geniuses nor crazy...

Today, March 30, is World Bipolar Disorder Day. Many famous people in history, such as Van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, Tchaikovsky, Hemingway, Beethoven, Churchill, Lincoln, and the poet Haizi, have suffered from bipolar disorder.

But due to the great achievements of celebrities, many people mistakenly believe that bipolar disorder is a "genius disease" and ignore the misfortunes of most ordinary bipolar patients.

Bipolar disorder is commonly known as manic-depressive illness. Patients will alternately experience two extreme emotions, mania and depression, which is like riding a roller coaster that can't stop for a moment and is extremely torturous.

Studies have shown that if a person develops bipolar disorder at the age of 20 and does not receive systematic treatment, he will lose 12 years of health, 14 years of work ability and 9 years of life expectancy.

In the book "I Want to Talk to You about the World of the Mental Patient", it is described as follows:

“Mania comes like a tide, either drowning us or pushing us to shore or beyond.”

"Depression, on the other hand, is like an endless swamp, and you can't gauge its direction or distance. In this state, you feel like you're floundering around. You want to escape, but you can't find anything to grab onto. You just struggle desperately to move forward, and you exhaust yourself."

Previously, the story of translator Jin Xiaoyu brought attention to bipolar disorder.

But I want to tell you that:

Mental illness is not a monster

We need to face it positively instead of avoiding it

The life of bipolar patients is not easy, but they are trying to climb out of the quagmire and embrace a better tomorrow. I hope that on days like today, we can embrace them and see that "they are not geniuses, nor are they crazy. They are just ordinary people who are sick."
