ACEA: European new car registrations in September 2020 reached 1.3 million, up 1.1% year-on-year

Data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) on Friday showed that new car registrations in the EU, UK and EFTA countries rose 1.1% year-on-year to 1.3 million in September, the first increase this year. But with the surge in COVID-19 cases in several countries, people are worried about whether the growth momentum can be sustained.

Performance in Europe's five largest car markets was mixed, with new car registrations falling in Spain, the United Kingdom and France, and rising in Italy and Germany.

Major automakers also had mixed results, with Volkswagen Group's sales increasing by 14.1% in September and Renault's sales increasing by 8.1%, but PSA Peugeot Citroen Group's sales falling by 14.1%, BMW falling by 11.9% and Daimler falling by 7.7%.

In the first nine months of this year, new car registrations in Europe fell 29%.
