Deloitte: Global Healthcare Outlook Report 2022

In 2022, two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, the global pandemic continues to occupy the attention and resources of health systems around the world:

As of December 14, 2021, the number of global COVID-19 cases has climbed to more than 270.9 million, and the death toll has exceeded 5.31 million. Studies have shown that certain racial, ethnic, and marginalized groups have been treated unfairly among those affected by the COVID-19 disease, which is a persistent problem surrounding health equity.

Low vaccination rates are hampering many countries’ ability to contain the pandemic. More than half of the world’s population has yet to receive any vaccine, a figure that drops to less than 5% in some low-income countries. Even in advanced economies, hesitancy, scheduling, transportation and convenient time issues prevent many people from getting vaccinated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and other aid groups called on leaders of the world's 20 largest economies to fund a $23.4 billion plan to provide COVID-19 vaccines, tests and medicines to poorer countries over the next 12 months.

The emotional, physical, and professional stress of dealing with COVID-19 for healthcare workers is incredibly high. In the United States, for example, 55% of frontline healthcare workers report burnout. This rate is highest among the youngest workers (69%). Healthcare organizations are struggling to support their workforce and retain talent, especially clinical staff.

The pandemic has also reduced consumers’ access to non-COVID-19 related healthcare services. Patients are delaying or forgoing a wide range of services, including emergency care for acute conditions, routine checkups, and cancer screenings. The impact of failure to intervene early, lack of chronic disease management, and undiagnosed illnesses on long-term health will be significant.
