Tesla to build factory in Europe, site selection to be next year

Recently, according to European Automotive News, a Tesla spokesperson said that Tesla plans to build a "super factory" in Europe to produce cars and electric vehicle batteries, and will start selecting a site next year.

According to local media speculation, Tesla may consider France, Spain and the Netherlands, but Tesla has not shown any preference.

In fact, Tesla already has a factory in the Netherlands that performs the final local assembly of cars produced in Fremont, U.S. If Tesla decides to replicate the solar roof of its Sparks, Nevada factory in Spain, Spain's abundant sunshine will be a big advantage.

A few days ago, Tesla just announced that it had agreed to acquire the German company Grohmann, which excels in robotics and automated production. Grohmann will be renamed Grohmann Automation, and Tesla said that Grohmann will help Tesla's factory become the most advanced factory. Grohmann has been working with Tesla for more than a year, and the scope of cooperation covers many key projects, including Tesla's first mass-produced model Model 3 .

Tesla said that the newly acquired factory will develop and build an automated production system based on the original site of Grohmann. The new factory will greatly improve the speed and quality of product production, while also reducing the production cost of each vehicle. The new factory will help increase production capacity and achieve the annual production target of 500,000 vehicles in 2018. At the beginning of this year, Tesla expected annual production in 2016 to reach 80,000 to 90,000 vehicles.

In May, Tesla said it had received 375,000 pre-orders for the Model 3. In October, Tesla said the Model 3 would be produced by the end of next year and delivered in 2018.

According to data provided by market analysis company JATO Dynamics, Tesla's cumulative sales in Europe from January to September this year were 11,775 units, of which 9,827 were Model S sedans and 1,902 were Model X large SUVs . Thanks to the strong push of the new Model X, Tesla's sales in Europe in September surged nearly 1.5 times to 3,206 units.
