Tesla Model 3 deliveries may be delayed until late 2018

Technology news website BGR cited the latest research report from analysts saying that the latest model of US electric car manufacturer Tesla, Model 3, may be delayed until the end of 2018.

Tesla has high hopes for the Model 3. However, whether the model can be delivered in sufficient quantities and on time has become one of the biggest problems facing Tesla. Although Tesla has vowed that the Model 3 will definitely be available for delivery by late 2017, the outside world still questions whether the company can actually fulfill its promise.

The reasons why the outside world doubts whether Model 3 can be delivered on time are as follows: First, Tesla's credit in guaranteeing delivery time has been overdrawn, and the repeated delays in the delivery of its Model X are the best evidence. Second, the demand for Model 3 exceeds what Tesla has encountered before, with reservations for more than 400,000 vehicles. Finally, although the process technology for producing Model 3 is not as complex as that of Model X, it requires Tesla's super battery factory in Nevada to produce a large number of battery packs at the fastest speed.

As for Tesla's ambitious delivery goals, the company has long claimed that it will increase annual production capacity to 500,000 vehicles by 2020. However, a few months ago, Tesla believed that the time point for achieving this goal could be brought forward to 2018.

After analyzing so much, many people may not be as optimistic as Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk about delivering Model 3 to consumers on time within a year or so, that is, late next year.

Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said in his latest research report that the first batch of Model 3 shipments may be delayed by up to twelve months.

Jonas said: "We still expect Model 3 deliveries to begin in late 2018, more than a year later than Tesla originally expected. Model 3 production will reach 60,000 in 2019 and 130,000 in 2020."

Tesla, meanwhile, said it plans to deliver up to 100,000 Model 3 electric cars by 2018.

If Jonas's prediction is correct, it would be a huge blow to Tesla's ambitious goal of actively promoting electric vehicles to the masses. With more than 400,000 consumers currently booking the Model 3, some consumers who booked the car in 2016 may have to wait until 2021 to receive their car.
