Fifteen Japanese companies , including Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi Electric, have formed a consortium to jointly draw detailed high-definition 3D maps for safe autonomous driving. The project is supported by the Japanese government and plans to provide autonomous car services during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The project, called Dynamic Map Planning, is led by Mitsubishi Electric and its mission is to map 30,000 kilometers of highways in Japan. The car configuration equipped with the Mobile Mapping System MMS-G220 uses lidar, cameras, GPS and other sensors to map at a cruising speed of 40 kilometers. It can capture objects 7 meters away with an absolute accuracy of 10 centimeters and collect 1 million data points per second.
