New Golf/Polo will use hybrid technology to bid farewell to the era of small diesel

Volkswagen plans to use a 48V mild hybrid system in the new Golf and Polo, which may herald the end of the era of small diesel cars.

Frank Welsch, head of Volkswagen's R&D department, said that the newly added 48v mild hybrid system and battery will reduce CO2 emissions by 6-8g/km. In addition, due to the high cost of diesel cars passing the test, small diesel cars may become a thing of the past forever.

Frank said that today, diesel cars cost more than gasoline cars. Although many customers choose the diesel version of Polo, this will soon become a thing of the past. The 48v mild hybrid system is only used as an auxiliary, and Mercedes-Benz does not position the models using this system as hybrid models. The system is expected to be applied to all compatible Mercedes-Benz models in the next few years, and foreign media predict that it can also be used with transverse engines. Since the electric motor is not connected to the transmission, the car cannot achieve pure electric driving mode, which is why it is called a mild hybrid system.

The advantage of the new system is that the engine starts faster, and the fuel economy of the new powertrain will be improved by 10 to 15% compared to traditional models. In addition, the system helps the vehicle improve performance, and the power output is expected to increase by 20 horsepower.
