Beijing becomes a major center for autonomous driving testing; three future innovation centers will help the development of intelligent transportation

At yesterday's "World Intelligent Connected Vehicle Conference", eight companies including Baidu, Shanghai Weilai, BAIC New Energy, Daimler, Pony.ai, Tencent, Didi, and Audi showed the world the results of their autonomous driving road tests in Beijing.

At present, Beijing has 123 kilometers of autonomous driving test roads, which are located in Shunyi, Fangshan, Haidian and Yizhuang, and include various traffic environments such as urban trunk roads, secondary trunk roads, branch roads, and park trunk roads, which can meet the needs of autonomous driving tests for passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

A relevant person in charge of the Beijing Intelligent Vehicle Industry Innovation Center said that in the future, autonomous driving vehicles may be first deployed in places such as highways and port logistics parks. As of October 17, the cumulative test mileage of autonomous driving vehicles on Beijing's roads has exceeded 63,000 kilometers, and no traffic accidents have occurred during the tests, which has not had an adverse impact on traffic. Beijing has become the city with the longest road test mileage, the most open test roads, and the most extensive distribution of test license plates in the country.

In the future, after the realization of 5G vehicle networking, vehicles on the road can receive information such as traffic lights, vehicles in front and behind in advance, reduce the occurrence of traffic accidents and improve traffic efficiency.

In the future, Beijing will promote the construction of three innovation centers: "National New Energy Vehicle Technology Innovation Center, China Automotive (Beijing) Intelligent Connected Vehicle Research Institute, and Autonomous Driving and Internet of Vehicles Test Verification and Demonstration Application Center". These innovation centers will help serve and test autonomous driving and promote the development of intelligent transportation.

In the future, autonomous driving technology will be applied to special vehicles such as food delivery vehicles, delivery vehicles, patrol vehicles and street sweepers, making our daily lives more convenient. Currently, these driverless vehicles are mainly operated in closed parks. As the technology continues to develop and mature, these autonomous vehicles will eventually enter open roads in urban areas and provide convenient services to more people.
