Tesla will be equipped with LG Chemical's ultra-high nickel battery, and CATL will follow closely

Recently, news from the supply chain revealed that LG Chem is planning to officially deliver ultra-high nickel NCMA batteries within the next year, that is, before the end of 2021.

It is reported that LG Chem's ultra-high nickel NCMA battery will be first used in Tesla Model Y. Previously, drones have captured that Tesla's Shanghai factory has begun production of Tesla Model Y, which will be shipped in the first quarter of 2021. This may also indicate that this battery will soon be officially commercialized.

The nickel content of LG Chem's ultra-high nickel NCMA battery positive electrode reaches 90%, while the cobalt content is reduced to less than 5%. A full charge will bring a range of more than 600km, which is much higher than the 500km range of the same level battery on the market.

Market analysts believe that Tesla chose this battery partly because of its ideal mileage, and partly because of the current status of cobalt resources.

In 2019, the world's proven cobalt reserves were only about 7 million tons, and "cobalt" is a non-renewable resource. Therefore, too much "cobalt" in the battery will bring great uncertainty to Tesla. From the industry's perspective, high nickel content in new energy vehicle batteries is also a general trend.
