Considering that Porsche’s profit margin per vehicle is nearly three times that of Volkswagen, is Mercedes-Benz really “cheating the poor”?

On the Chinese Internet, there are jokes everywhere about "Mercedes-Benz does not cheat the poor." In fact, if we look at the profit margin of Mercedes-Benz per vehicle, we will find that Mercedes-Benz is not only inferior to BMW in terms of profit efficiency, but even lower than Audi.

In a 2019 report, Mercedes-Benz's average profit margin of 7.9% per car barely beat Volvo. The only oddity on the list is Maserati, which has an average profit of 4,000 euros per car, but a profit margin of only 4.8%. Yesterday, Porsche held its 2021 global annual press conference via video link between Stuttgart and Shanghai. At the conference, Porsche announced its operating performance in 2020 and its business strategy for the next decade.

Data shows that although 2020 was very difficult, Porsche still earned 100 million euros more than last year in the past year, achieved operating income of 28.7 billion euros, and sales profit of 4.2 billion euros. Although the profit margin per vehicle was slightly lower than the previous year, it was still as high as 14.6%.

Who is Porsche making money from? Just look at the locations where its launch events are held - Stuttgart and Shanghai. The answer is self-evident.

Judging from the data, Porsche's ability to make money is terrifying, especially compared with Volkswagen's profit margin of 4.5%. The profit margin of nearly 3 times is enough to make it stand out from the crowd, and also gives it enough confidence to announce its strategic plan for the next ten years.

Mr. Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Porsche Global Executive Board, said that the company will accelerate its transformation to electrification. In 2025, pure electric and hybrid models will account for 50% of total deliveries, and by 2030, this proportion will increase to 80%.

In 2020, Porsche's pure electric vehicle Taycan delivered 20,015 units worldwide, accounting for 7% of its total deliveries. Bill Gates, the world's former richest man, also owns one.

From less than 8% to 16.7% of the profit margin per vehicle, who never cheats the poor? In front of Porsche, Mercedes-Benz is really a younger brother.
