INSIDEEVs: Tesla ranks first in pure electric vehicle sales in Q2 2022 with 250,000 units

Foreign media INSIDEEVs released the sales data of pure electric vehicles of three automakers, Tesla, BYD and Volkswagen, in the second quarter of 2022. Among them, Tesla ranked first in the world with 254,695 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 27%; BYD's sales reached 180,296 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 227%, consolidating its second place; Volkswagen's sales also reached about 118,000 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 6.3%.

Due to the impact of the epidemic in Shanghai, Tesla's Shanghai factory stopped production for a long time in the second quarter, resulting in quarterly sales far lower than the previous two quarters. But even so, Tesla still achieved sales of 250,000 vehicles and continued to maintain its leading position in the pure electric vehicle market. Starting from July, the Shanghai factory will upgrade its production line, and the production capacity of Model 3/Y will be improved. Sales in the second half of the year should be able to increase significantly.

BYD's factories are located in many places in China, and the epidemic has had little impact on it. However, because most of BYD's models are DM hybrid vehicles, which share part of the production capacity of pure electric vehicles, its sales volume is only 180,000 vehicles, accounting for only about 70% of Tesla's. Although it has secured the title of the world's second largest, it is still far behind Tesla.

Xiao Lei learned that BYD's cumulative sales of new energy passenger vehicles in the first half of the year reached 638,157 units, of which pure electric vehicles had a cumulative sales of 323,519 units, and DM hybrid vehicles had a cumulative sales of 314,638 units, with pure electric and hybrid vehicles accounting for almost half each. Tesla's total sales in the first half of the year were 563,000 units, which is nearly 80,000 units behind BYD. In terms of total sales, BYD is still far ahead of Tesla.

Of course, Tesla does have a big advantage in the pure electric vehicle market, after all, this is what they are best at. But from the perspective of the entire new energy vehicle industry, hybrid vehicles also have an irreplaceable position, which is one of the reasons why more people accept and buy new energy vehicles. Compared with pure electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles can be powered by oil or electricity, and there is no need to worry about battery life and charging. In addition, their prices are relatively more affordable, which reduces the cost of car purchases for consumers to a certain extent, and plays a key role in accelerating the popularization of new energy vehicles.

In the second half of the year, Tesla's factory expansion accelerated, and BYD also increased its production capacity, so the competition between the two should be more intense. But even so, the current production capacity still cannot meet the market demand. Both companies still have a large number of undelivered orders and need to continue to work hard to increase production.
