Geely: 70%-80% of electric vehicles are powered by dirty energy

Recently, the 2022 World Power Battery Conference was held in Yibin, Sichuan. At the conference, a number of domestic automakers, power battery manufacturers, and executives of upstream and downstream automotive companies expressed their views on the current status and future development of the industry. At the conference, Geely Chairman Li Shufu strongly called for the promotion of methanol fuel vehicles. Li Shufu said that 70%-80% of the electricity used by electric vehicles is still generated by coal, and everyone has different opinions on whether it is a clean energy.

How to effectively store wind energy, hydropower, solar energy and various green unstable energy sources? Electricity is something that will disappear if you don’t use it. To turn electricity into a stable liquid energy source, their research conclusion is that the only way to synthesize electricity and carbon dioxide is to turn electricity into "methanol" fuel, which can be stored forever at normal temperature and pressure.

It is reported that the main source of methanol in my country is coal. Unlike the direct combustion and direct emission of coal-fired power generation, the coal-to-methanol process is more green and environmentally friendly.

Not only that, the coupling of coal-to-methanol and renewable energy electrolysis water hydrogen production technology can achieve near-zero emissions in the methanol production process, and the combustion of methanol will not produce excess waste, making it an ideal environmentally friendly fuel.

In fact, Geely is also one of the earliest car companies in my country to research methanol power. The corrosiveness of methanol fuel has always been a major problem that has plagued the development of methanol engines.

Geely has completed material upgrades through research on the basic materials of important engine parts such as cylinder liners, cylinder heads, and valves, and has solved the problem of methanol fuel corrosion by using advanced processes such as surface spraying and plating. Geely technicians said that in the past, methanol injectors could last for 100,000 kilometers, but now they can last for 800,000 kilometers without any problems.

At the same time, Geely has also launched the fourth-generation Emgrand methanol-electric hybrid sedan. As the world's first methanol-electric hybrid sedan launched by its group, it only costs 0.2-0.3 cents per kilometer. In addition, methanol gas is more environmentally friendly. Over the same mileage, the emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen monoxide of methanol cars are reduced by 80%, 59% and 95% respectively.
