Sinopec: 2021-2030 China Express Delivery Industry Green Packaging Carbon Emission Reduction Potential Research Report

Sinopec officially released the " 2021-2030 China Express Industry Green Packaging Carbon Emission Reduction Potential Research Report". The report shows that in 2020 , the total carbon emissions of China's express packaging in the entire process of production and waste treatment was 23.9584 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent . If the disposable plastic bags produced by the express industry are not recycled or replaced, the cumulative carbon emissions of disposable plastic bags in China's express industry from 2021 to 2030 will reach 59.61 million tons.

The report shows that in 2020 , the business volume of express delivery service enterprises nationwide reached 83.36 billion pieces, an increase of nearly 70% compared with 2018. With the growth of express delivery volume, the problem of carbon emissions from express packaging has become increasingly prominent. In 2020 , the total carbon emissions from express packaging in China were 23.9584 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, which would require the planting of trees equivalent to the land area of ​​Beijing to offset. However, at present, most plastic express packaging is landfilled or incinerated with domestic waste.

The report shows that promoting the use of recycled packaging plastics can not only effectively control the generation of plastic waste, but also reduce carbon emissions caused by express packaging materials. However, in recent years, China's pilot promotion of the use of recycled packaging for express delivery still faces some problems, such as the inability to form a closed loop for recycling, the lack of mandatory policies, and the lack of consumer habits.

The promotion of recycled express packaging is a systematic project. The report suggests that, first of all, an industrial chain and an ecological chain should be formed, and the issue of recycled express packaging should be considered as a whole in combination with garbage classification and plastic reduction and restriction policies. Secondly, express packaging waste should be included in the construction system of local garbage classification and recycling of renewable resources for governance. The local government should take the lead as the link " hub " of all parties in the industrial chain , based on resource utilization, and promote the standardization and normalization of the operating paradigm of the collaborative and sharing mechanism of recycled express packaging. Thirdly, it is recommended to implement the " one-time packaging charging policy + recycled packaging deposit system " to solve the problem of " difficult recycling " of recycled express packaging . Finally, support enterprises with a network system to become urban public environmental service providers, such as express company online stores, large petrochemical enterprise gas stations, etc.
