Not surprisingly, 2022 has been tougher than many expected.

Local companies (state-owned enterprises & private enterprises) participating in the survey: 22% said their performance was higher than expected, possibly because they were more cautious when making their expectations at the end of 2021 (many private companies engaged in the biotechnology industry in China have not yet begun to reap profits).

Due to the extremely special business environment, foreign-invested enterprises (wholly foreign-owned enterprises) suffered the greatest impact in 2022. 61% of foreign companies surveyed said that their annual performance was not as good as expected.

The vast majority of companies regard epidemic control as the most influencing factor. Compared with last year, the impact of "changes in the number of hospital visits" has received more attention from foreign-owned enterprises.

Medical reform policies such as volume-based procurement remain the factors with the longest long-term impact, with particularly serious impacts on private enterprises (71%), large enterprises (69%) and life science companies (63%).

The impact of supply chain localization (or expansion) on “large enterprises & wholly foreign-owned enterprises” has increased, which is in line with the recent macro-guidance of the Chinese government (and will also be supported by local preferential policies).

The digital field remains an investment focus for all types of companies. State-owned and private enterprises stated that they will allocate more resources to improving data and information technology security in 2023, while foreign companies will maintain a similar amount of resource allocation (also for compliance management).

It is no longer taboo for foreign companies to deploy localized tools that are different from global tools.

State-owned and private enterprises will further change their talent patterns - similar to the amount of resource allocation at this point, striving to catch up with foreign companies.
