Chrome extension Safe Browsing service can prevent homepage tampering

Google recently announced that it will expand the functionality of its safe browsing service "Safe Browsing". In addition to continuing to help users identify malicious websites and programs, the updated Safe Browsing can also prevent malicious programs from tampering with browser settings without authorization, such as changing the homepage without the user's permission.

Many malicious programs will pretend to be tools. When users download and install them, they will tamper with system settings including browser homepage without the user's knowledge. The upgraded Safe Browsing can identify these malicious programs. Google said the new feature will be automatically deployed through Chrome updates this week. When users encounter settings that have been modified, the software will pop up a corresponding prompt to the user.

Unlike general independent security software, in order to prevent false alarms, Google Chrome will not automatically delete files downloaded by users. If the user is sure that the downloaded file is safe, it can still be opened normally.

According to Google's statistics, the Safe Browsing service currently issues more than 3 million download warnings per week. In addition to Chrome, Safe Browsing is also open to browsers including Safari and Firefox. The service currently has more than 1.1 billion users.
