Globally, the high price of electric vehicles remains one of the biggest barriers to potential buyers placing orders. The main reason why electric vehicles are currently more expensive to manufacture than traditional fuel vehicles is the high cost of advanced battery and motor technology. The recent solution on the market is to improve the efficiency of existing battery technology through energy conservation at the vehicle level, including improved integration with electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Now, these challenges can be solved by the latest OLEA U310 system-on-chip (SoC) released by Intel subsidiary Silicon Mobility. This next-generation technology can significantly improve the overall performance of electric vehicles, simplify the design and production process, and expand SoC services to ensure seamless operation in various EV charging platforms.

This new SoC is Silicon Mobility's first complete solution in the industry that integrates hardware and software. OLEA U310 is specifically designed to be combined with distributed software to meet the needs of powertrain domain control in electrical architectures. Based on a unique hybrid and heterogeneous architecture, a single OLEA 310 FPCU can replace up to 6 standard microcontrollers in a system combination to control inverters, motors, gearboxes, DC-DC converters, and on-board charging in parallel. Using the 310 FPCU, OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers can achieve real-time control of multiple different power and energy functions simultaneously.

In addition to the reduction in the bill of materials (BoM), early data shows that the use of OLEA 310 can improve energy efficiency by 5%, reduce motor size by 25%, reduce cooling requirements by 35%, and reduce passive component size by 30 times compared to today's electric vehicles at the same power. The launch of Silicon Mobility's new solution enables electric vehicle manufacturers to design software-defined electric vehicles with superior performance, longer driving range, and potentially lower production costs because the number of components that need to be integrated is reduced. This new solution, combined with Intel's already launched AI-enhanced software-defined vehicle (SDV) SoC series, will jointly drive the industry's transformation to an all-electric and software-defined future.
