CIST: Survey finds 62% of game studios use AI in development

A recent survey found that nearly two-thirds of game studios use AI in the process of developing games. This is the conclusion of a survey of more than 300 respondents conducted by market research firm CIST on behalf of game engine maker Unity.

Unity recently stated in its latest annual market report: "Of the game studios we surveyed, 62% said they used AI in their development process, primarily for rapid prototyping, concept design, asset creation, and world building."

According to Unity, the average time to release a game will increase from 218 days in 2022 to 304 days in 2023. While learning to use new technologies that help speed up development can be challenging, 71% of studios surveyed that use AI say it has improved their delivery and operations.

38% of the studios surveyed said they were reluctant to use AI, 43% of them said they were interested in AI but did not have the time to use it, and 24% said they did not have the technical ability to use AI.

Recently, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said that he hopes that in the next five years, generative AI will enable EA to improve development efficiency by 30%, increase its 700 million player base by "at least" 50%, and increase player spending on its games by 10-20%.
